Nature
really is the best teacher. Almost every lesson we need to learn can be
taught by nature. The old stories handed down to the younger generations
by the indigenous peoples of the world were almost always connected with
nature.
At Dancing Coyote
Camp, children learn a sense of their own place in nature. They learn
about a wide variety of subjects with lessons focusing on one topic at
a time, but utilizing a number of skills:
- Geology –
more than just rocks, boulders, and mountains, the children learn
about native American creation myths and stories
- History and Anthropology
– learning about human needs, native peoples
- Energy –
sources and how they serve mankind, our role in the stewardship of
these energy sources, elements of Earth, Fire, Water, and Sky
- Botany –
the camp and surrounding area are filled with hundreds of plants about
which to learn, leaf identification, photosynthesis, practical uses
- Zoology –
the wide variety of local animals provides an excellent classroom,
track identification, eating habits, interactions with people, observation
of animal habitats
- Astronomy –
studying the night sky to identify constellations, point out planets,
and learn features and phases of the moon
- Meteorology –
whatever the conditions, it's always a lesson in reading weather patterns,
cloud formations, the water cycle
- Art – nature
makes the perfect subject for children's art projects, drawing and
painting their discoveries makes the experience more memorable
- Writing –
as the children write in their journals, keep notes from experiments,
and even practice their storytelling and poetry, they develop a stronger
sense of their own style of writing
- Communication,
leadership, team building – these crucial skills are developed
through team exercises and fun activities like skits and storytelling
Your
child's natural curiosity will be stimulated through a range of techniques:
story telling, self-discovery, experimentation, writing results, group
discussion, questions and answers, visiting experts, and more. Individual
learning styles are easily accommodated. The children learn using the
Montessori approach: through focused sensory awareness activities, physical
activity, and then synthesizing the outcome of the lessons.
Teaching our connections
with and our place within nature is easy at Dancing Coyote Camp. Everything
around us is readily available for exploration.
