How Dancing Coyote Camp Got Its Name |

Even before the summer camp was conceived, Gayle Holeton, her husband Bert and their two dogs, Sahalee and Tahoma, were walking through 3 feet of snow on their property in mid-winter. Through the trees to the east about 100 yards away across a natural valley was a large black and silver coyote. Though Gayle and Bert had just spotted the coyote looking over its shoulder at them, it seemed obvious that he had been shadowing the group for some time. He was quiet and down wind, the two dogs did not even notice he was there. A few months later, early that spring, with snow still two feet deep, Bert was helping a neighbor bring up two snowmobiles along the drive running around the property. Gayle was in town looking over maps to discover a potential name for the new camp; some name that perhaps was associated with a peak or prominent land feature in the Cascade or Enchantment Mountain Ranges. Right in front of the snowmobiles, skipping and dancing through the snow off of the property, came a black and silver coyote pup. He seemed to be really enjoying himself and glanced at Bert as if to say, “you are so lucky to have such a fun place for human pups to come and play.” Bert called Gayle on the cell phone and suggested that perhaps a name for the camp has been chosen for them.
