Dancing Coyote Camp — The Nature Awareness Experience for Children Ages 7-14

Create Your Own Nature Journal

A nature journal will sharpen your observation skills. You may see something in your own yard that has been there all along, but you never noticed. With practice, your entries will develop a style whether it be simply recording what you see, intricate drawings or even a poem.

Supplies needed for your Nature Journal:

  • Pencil
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Unlined paper in a spiral notebook
  • Ziploc bag to keep everything dry

What to write in your Nature Journal

  • Start by recording the weather and date, and then open all your senses.
    • What sounds do you hear?
    • What smells are in the air?
  • Draw the points of the compass and try to locate the direction of the wind.
  • What kinds of clouds are there in the sky today?
  • Now focus on something that catches your eye, a flower, the bark of a tree, a seed, and an insect. Begin drawing in your journal.

Be creative and have fun with your nature journal.
