You'll
be at Dancing Coyote Camp for a whole week (or maybe two). That means
you need to come prepared, yet be comfortable carrying your gear. We have
found that the following list of equipment and clothing works well for
most student campers.
Important: Parents,
please help your student camper pack for the trip! Do not over-pack!
PRINTER
FRIENDLY CHECKLIST
Camping gear can be
found at REI, GI
Joe's, and other outfitters.
Sleeping
in the Tipis
- Summer weight
sleeping bag. Lowest temperature at night will be about 50 degrees.
To be manageable, it should be the type that stuffs in a small pack/sack
or be rolled tightly.
- Small pillow,
inflatable ones work well.
- Foam sleeping
mat, the size of your body and sleeping bag. Therma-rest™ -type
self-inflating mat will work.
- Sleeping attire.
Do not plan to sleep in your clothing unless brought for that purpose.
It is important to wear clean pajamas to bed - something one could wear
to visit the restroom at night.
- Light slippers,
soft-soled foot coverings, or socks (or bare feet) for inside the tipis.
What
to Wear
- Duffle bag or
other type of small suitcase to bring your clothes in.
- Several pairs
of long pants. Pants should be easy to move in, like sweatpants (jeans
usually chafe) and something that will take hard wear, or that has already
seen better days. It is cool (50-70 degrees) in the morning and evening.
Long pants are also required to discourage mosquitoes. During the day
it may be as warm as 80-95 degrees)
- Shorts are the
garment of choice for most of the time. Should be easy to move around
in. Some people like to wear "long johns" or tights under
their shorts so they can quickly change while on a hike and do not have
to carry the heavier pants.
- One t-shirt per
day.
- About four long-sleeved
shirts, good for layering, sun protection, mosquito protection.
- Daily change of
underwear, plus extra.
- Swimsuit.
- Windbreaker type
jacket. If it doesn't have a hood, then a hat for warmth will need to
be packed as well.
- Baseball cap,
sun hat, or visor to keep excess sun off nose and face.
- One clean set
of clothes for going home.
For
Your Feet
- It is not advisable
to have bare feet except in the tipis. No shoes are allowed in the tipis.
- Light hiking shoes
or boots. Must have good support for uneven ground.
- Tennis shoes.
For around camp, games, and exploration.
- Water shoes, Teva's™,
or old tennis shoes, that can be worn in the river and showers.
- Plenty of athletic
or hiking socks. Be sure to find a good combination of thickness of
sock to boot before camp as blisters are not fun on a hike and can hamper
your progress the next day. Wicking ability is important also as our
activity will be exerting and the day may be hot. You may want to consider
thin inner/liner socks. Do not plan on socks returning to their "white
state" ever again.
Miscellaneous,
but Necessary
- Laundry sack.
After each day's activities and before getting "clean" for
bed, campers can deposit dirty clothing in this bag if there is not
a chance it will be needed again.
- Shower kit: Towel.
Washcloth in ziplock bags with name visible. Tooth brush, toothpaste
and floss. Hairbrush and/or comb. Sunscreen, lotion and mosquito repellent.
Anything else you may need in this category. Just make sure containers
are spill proof and compact. We provide a biodegradable soap and shampoo
in the showers.
- Small flashlight,
only for emergencies at night.
- Pen and pencils.
- Silent reading
book.
- Two water bottles,
(about 16 oz. in size) labeled with name, needed for hikes and kept
handy by bedside.
- Daypack for all
trips away from camp. Large enough to carry water, extra shirt, and
few other things depending on the trip, but comfortable enough to wear
for long periods and distributes weight in the right proportions for
your body size.
Packing
for a Two-Week Camp
Pack for one week.
Ensure that all clothes are clearly marked with your child's name. Laundry
services will be provided.
Packing
Tips
Lay out on the floor
everything you plan to bring. Check it all twice, then carefully put it
into the pack or duffle. All this equipment should be what you can carry
by yourself.
Do not bring food
to camp. We will supply healthy bed time snacks.
Do not bring your
Gameboy, Walkman, cellphone, or any other electronic equipment. They are
not allowed at camp. You'll be too busy to use them anyway.
